As background, in January 2020, the City of Ottawa issued a Technical Bulletin advising that it is phasing in a requirement that an acceptable occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS), validated by an external third party, must be in place prior to a contract being awarded. The Technical Bulletin confirms what an OHSMS is, why the City is introducing this requirement, and which OHSMS the City will accept.
Acceptable OHSMS are:
- ISO 45001:2018
- CSA Z45001:19
- COR 2020
Timelines for certification are as follows:
- January 1, 2023 – contracts over $10 million
- January 1, 2025 – contracts over $1 million
- January 1, 2026 – contracts and subcontracts over $100 thousand
